Home to the Carroll County Historical Society and Museum, the historic courthouse was built in 1873 and is the site of the infamous "1912 Courthouse Tragedy."  https://carrollvamuseum.org/museum/courthouse-tragedy/  "Thunder in the Hills"--historic drama by playwright Frank Levering--is performed each spring in the very courtroom where the tragedy happened more than a century ago. The Tavern: The oldest building in Abingdon, constructed in 1779, the Tavern served as a field hospital during the Civil War. In the hospital section on the third floor, charcoaled numbers, used to designate soldiers' beds, are still visible. Hours: See web site for details...
