Wineries

The picturesque mountainsides of Southwest Virginia are home to a number of well-established wineries, thanks in large part to a good climate for growing grapes, as well as a loamy and gravelly soil with good drainage and stunning elevations.

Throughout the region, you’ll find a wide variety of enjoyable wines, ranging from reds and whites to sweet and limited releases. A brief description of each of Southwest Virginia’s offerings follows:

 

ABINGDON VINEYARDS

With more than 20 wines available, there’s no doubt you’ll discover one or more that you’ll really enjoy. Come in for a tasting and picnic on the beautiful riverfront setting – kids, dogs, and kayaks are always welcome! Winery tours are available by appointment.

 

BELIVEAU ESTATE WINERY

Situated on 165 beautiful acres with on-site hiking, shaded picnic areas, award-winning wines, and a popular bed and breakfast, Beliveau is also a gorgeous wedding venue. Lite food fare is available for purchase.

 

BLACKSNAKE MEADERY

A farm winery that specializes in honey wines, or meads, Blacksnake, which uses Virginia Wildflower honey to produce the mead, is Carroll County’s first winery and Southwest Virginia’s only meadery. Featured wines range from a sweet dessert mead to dry meads.

 

CHATEAU MORRISETTE WINERY

A third-generation tradition in Virginia winemaking, Chateau Morrisette has featured handcrafted wines since 1978. Tastings, tours, fine dining at the Chateau Morrisette Restaurant, and much more awaits you in Floyd!

 

DAVIS VALLEY WINERY

With the enchanting mountains of Southwest Virginia as a backdrop, this farm winery has to be on your bucket list. Drop by the tasting room to sample wines on a 100-year-old handcrafted oak bar, visit the gift shop or just sit on the veranda and enjoy the spectacular view.

 

FIREFLY VINEYARDS

Family-owned and operated and located in Elliston, just a couple of miles from I-81 and sitting amidst the gorgeous Blue Ridge Mountains, Firefly started producing wine in 2011. Tastings by appointment are offered and they only produce wines they themselves would drink.

 

GILES MOUNTAIN VINEYARD AND WINERY

An estate winery that produces exceptional wines that reflect their sustainability, the beautiful mountains of the region and their dedication to community, Giles Mountain is Green-certified and their wines capture the unique limestone and shale soils where their grapes are produced.

 

IRON HEART WINERY

A family-owned farm in the Appalachian Mountains, Iron Heart offers a charming retreat where everyone can enjoy the gorgeous scenery and some delicious wine. Come try some of our wonderful wines in our tasting room which is open on Saturday and Sunday.

 

JBR VINEYARDS AND WINERY

At an elevation of 1,800 feet in the mountains of Giles County, JBR passionately produces small quantities of hand-tended classic wine grapes and hand-crafted wines. The first vineyard in Giles County, both the winery and vineyard are currently only open by appointment.

 

MOUNTAINROSE VINEYARDS

Having planted its first vines in 1996, MountainRose has eight varieties of grapes, including Traminette, Riesling, Niagara, Cabernet franc, Chancellor. Abundant in minerals the special soil around the vineyard gives these wines beautiful rich colors and intense fruity flavors and aromas. Tours and tastings available.

 

MT VALE VINEYARDS

Located in Galax and only four miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway, Mt. Vale sits on 38 acres and its owners’ endeavor to continually produce outstanding wines. A wonderful place to relax and forget your worries, the vineyard produces a variety of wines and is open for tastings.

 

RURAL RETREAT WINERY AND VINEYARDS

Making fine wines since 1996, the winery’s selection includes full body reds and lovely whites. Located in Rural Retreat, the winery also features a full-service deli, where you can grab a bite and relax on the large porch while enjoying your wine.

 

STANBURN WINERY

The family-owned and operated vineyard, which is located in Patrick County, has been making wine since 1999. Offering a dozen different wines, from dry to semi-sweet to sweet, the owners’ passion is growing grapes from which wines bursting with flavor are produced.

 

THE NEW RIVER VINEYARD & WINERY

Family-owned and operated and located in the heart of the New River Valley, this boutique farm winery offers a variety of handcrafted single vineyard wines all grown on site. Featuring a number of sweet and dry wines, you’ll definitely find something to satisfy your palate.

 

VILLA APPALACCIA

You can enjoy a piece of Tuscany in the Blue Ridge Mountains at Villa Appalaccia, which features Italian-inspired wines. Made from Primito, Sangiovese, Malvasia, Aglianico, Corvina, Montepulciano, and Cabernet Franc grapes, the wines are unique and delicious and pair wonderfully with local cheeses that are also offered.

 

WEST WIND FARM VINEYARD WINERY

Located on a fourth-generation homestead in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Max Meadows, West Wind’s grapevines were planted in 2003 and the first win was made in 2005. The winery features a great selection of small-batch red and white wines, along with sweeter selections and limited release wines.

 

WHITEBARREL WINERY

Located in Montgomery County, Whitebarrel grows both red and white grapes and uses mostly organic treatments, a bio-dynamic approach, and a focus on sustainable farming practices. A “Virginia Green” winery, it offers Vidal, Chardonnay, blended white wines, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chambourcin, and blended reds.
