The Clinch River, named for a long forgotten explorer, originates near Tazewell and travels approximately 135 miles, reaching into Tazewell, Russell, Wise and Scott counties before it crosses into Tennessee.
The crown of the region, the Clinch River played a crucial role in the exploration and settlement of Southwest Virginia. Daniel Boone, who lived near Castlewood for a short time and was likely the most famous pioneer explorer to walk the banks of the Clinch, negotiated the river a number of times on his adventures through Southwest Virginia.
An incredible diversity of life is now present in and around the river. The Clinch supports a unique assemblage of aquatic life and is home to about 50 species of mussels, more than any other river in the world, and over 100 species of non-game fish. The variety of sport fish in the river makes the Clinch a hugely popular destination for anglers.
While fishing is definitely uppermost in the minds of many who spend time on the Clinch, visitors also love to float and kayak along the rivers or just enjoy the spectacular scenery.
