Washington County Courthouse: the previous courthouse, also located on this site, was burned on December 14, 1864, during Stoneman's Raid, by Union Captain James B. Wyatt, with the 13th Tennessee Cavalry. Wyatt was raised in Abingdon and as a youngster had several run-ins with the local law enforcement. Evidently, Wyatt held a grudge against a local judge, so after Stoneman's forces had moved north out of Abingdon, Wyatt stayed behind and sought revenge by setting...

Step back in time to the early 1900's, the construction of the 1908 Courthouse, and life in Grayson County. The Vault Museum features an exhibit of an early mountain home, barn and blacksmith shop. Home to the Carroll County Historical Society and Museum, the historic courthouse was built in 1873 and is the site of the infamous "1912 Courthouse Tragedy."  https://carrollvamuseum.org/museum/courthouse-tragedy/  "Thunder in the Hills"--historic drama by playwright Frank Levering--is performed each spring in the very courtroom where the tragedy happened more than a century ago. The Tavern: The oldest building in Abingdon, constructed in 1779, the Tavern served as a field hospital during the Civil War. In the hospital section on the third floor, charcoaled numbers, used to designate soldiers' beds, are still visible. Hours: See web site for details...

A restored 1938 movie house, The Lyric Theatre provides the community with film, live plays, dance, music, and lectures.
