Historical Society of Washington County

The Historical Society’s office is at 341 W. Main St., in downtown Abingdon.

The Society is the leading center in the region for genealogical and historical research, with a digital database of over 180,000 images. These images include:

  • digitized photographs of people in varying scenes both posed and candid.
  • images we have digitized of churches, houses, schools, bridges, mills, railroads, tombstones, historical scenes, etc.
  • digitized images of documents covering a wide range of historical interest, such as marriage certificates, obituaries, military documents, letters, newspaper articles, business receipts, etc.

This index is available on the web site, www.hswcv.org. No images can be viewed on the web site; however, all of the images are viewable at the Historical Society offices and emailed or printed copies are available for purchase.

The Society is an all volunteer non-profit organization. Please call us at 276-623-8337 to be sure we are open if you are planning a visit from out-of-town.

Our hours are 10-4 Tuesday/Friday and 11-4 on Saturday, March through mid-December. We accept Visa, MasterCard, checks, and cash.
