Authentic Appalachia: A Southwest Virginia Escape

Day One
Plan to arrive in Abingdon by mid-afternoon. After checking into one of our unique Bed & Breakfasts or Cabins, take a stroll down our historic Main Street – sample olive oils and balsamics at Abingdon Olive Oil Co., get your spices and culinary goods from around the world at Necessities or sit a spell and have afternoon tea at Camella’s Remember When. Then grab a locally-sourced dinner at one of our Rooted in Appalachia restaurants. Afterwards, escape the world with our professional actors at Barter Theatre.

Day Two
Start your biking adventure at Virginia Creeper Trail Bike Shop to get fitted for your gear. The shop can then shuttle you up to Whitetop Mountain – the second highest peak in Virginia. From there it’s all downhill through the Jefferson National Forrest to Damascus, VA. Once in Damascus, stop for lunch at BoBo’s, located right off the trail. Then continue your ride through scenic Southwest Virginia back to Abingdon. Before heading back to freshen up for dinner, stop by Wolf Hills Brewery for some locally crafted beers and live music. Then try out a different Rooted in Appalachian restaurant for dinner – there are plenty choose from!

Day Three
After checking out, head to Wolf Hills Coffee Co. for breakfast and some locally roasted coffee – make sure to grab a bag of grounds to take home with you. Then take a short scenic drive out to White’s Mill to see the working grist mill or go to The Abingdon Muster Grounds to learn about our unique role in the Revolutionary War. Then head to the Southwest Virginia Cultural Center and Marketplace to check-out the best of region’s artisan crafts, heritage music and wine. Before leaving use the Interactive Mountain to plan your next Southwest Virginia Escape!
