Abingdon celebrates its unique history as an Appalachian frontier town with a LOVEwork inspired by the legendary Daniel Boone. In the 1760s, Boone was surveying the land that would eventually become Abingdon. Legend holds that as he was camping, a pack of wolves emerged from a nearby cave and attacked his hunting dogs before being driven away. Boone nicknamed the area “Wolf Hills.”
The Abingdon LOVEwork is 7 feet high and 15 feet wide, featuring a howling wolf. You’ll find it on Main Street, directly across the street from Barter Theatre, the State Theatre of Virginia. While you’re visiting the LOVEwork, stop and throw a penny in the adjacent fountain. The sculpture, by artist Charles Vess, is inspired by Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
