Day One:
Are there zebras and camels in the mountains? Absolutely! Gather the grandkids and get ready for a day filled with fun and fur. Located just off the interstates of I-77/I-81, you’ll find Fort Chiswell Animal Park. They have animals from six of the seven continents on forty-five acres surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains. All ages will enjoy the “outback” experience as you are taken on a guided bus ride where you can get up close and personal with the furry, four-legged residents. Once the animals hear the bus, they come around to be fed by you and your family. There’s also a Petting Zoo for the youngest ones in the group. Their gift shop is full of lovable, huggable souvenirs and take-home goodies.
Next enjoy lunch at one of our many restaurants before heading to the Wytheville Community Center. There you’ll find something for all ages including Olympic size pool, open gym, youth/teen center, walking track, climbing wall and racquetball court. They have “day passes” as reasonable prices.
Day Two:
After a good night’s sleep and breakfast at one of our 25 hotels, your grandkids will love traveling to nearby Bland County to visit Wolf Creek Indian Village and Museum. Interpretive guides lead a hands-on exploration of primitive skills, including handmade replicas of tools, baskets, weapons, pottery and tanned animal hides. Nature walking trails wind through the village complex. The museum houses a gift shop with Native American made arts and crafts. On the way back to Wytheville, travel across Big Walker Mountain along Highway 52 to Big Walker Lookout and Country Store. Your grandkids can race to the top of the 100-foot lookout tower while you shop for locally made arts, crafts and homemade goods. While winding down, you can all enjoy a cone of handmade ice cream while enjoying the beautiful scenic view!
You and the grandkids will love the nighttime entertainment at the Wohlfahrt Haus Dinner Theatre…you’ll be served a four-course dinner followed by a Broadway-caliber musical. Celebrate life together with your grandchildren in Wytheville, VA…small town…BIG Experience!
