The recreation area is managed by the U.S. Forest Service. The 45-acre lake is a state-stocked fishery managed by the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources. Cloudsplitter 100 Ultramarathon

The Cloudsplitter 100 is an ultramarathon trail running event that offers course distances of 25 kilometers, 50 kilometers, 100 kilometers, and 100 miles. The race runs the Flag Rock Area Trails system in the City of Norton and several trails and forest roads in the U.S. Forest Service's Clinch Ranger District in neighboring Wise and Scott counties.
